Abstract/Notes Community-based participatory research (CBPR), a qualitative methodology that emphasizes respect for the individual and a commitment to social change, is emerging as a way to enable research to empower communities. This article examines the origins and characteristics of CBPR, and discusses how the ethodology is particularly effective in empowering First Nations communities. Drawing on her own experience as a Person doing participatory research with a community human services organization. the author also discusses the pragmatics of doing CBPR. Though it has enormous potential, CBPR is a difficult, demanding and time-consuming process in which the fact of community participation is not easily achieved
